Lavender, cedarwood, and the end of the day

Lavender alone is too sweet. Cedarwood alone is too dry. Together they sit in the place where most "end of the day" actually happens — neither floral nor masculine, neither precious nor utilitarian.

Lavender is the most-recognized calming scent on earth. It owes that distinction to a few hundred years of European herbal medicine and a more recent body of olfactory research showing it correlates with self-reported relaxation. Linalool — the dominant compound in lavender — has been studied for its parasympathetic effects in lab settings. We won't tell you our candle does any of that. What we'll tell you is: when you smell good lavender at the end of a long day, your shoulders drop. That part is empirical.

Cedarwood does the opposite kind of work. It's structural — woody, dry, slightly resinous. Where lavender wants to be sweet, cedar pulls it down. Where lavender can read floral or feminine, cedar reads earthy, ungendered. The pairing has been a candle archetype for so long that you forget candles existed before it.

Why the dried sprigs

We embed real dried lavender sprigs in the wax — not for show, though they look good — because as the wax pool reaches them, the front-of-jar scent shifts. Dried botanicals heated gently release a different vapor profile than fragrance oil alone: more grassy, less perfume-y, closer to the actual flower in a field. It's the reason a working lavender field smells different than a lavender candle, and the reason ours splits the difference.

When to light it

Past 7pm, ideally. Lavender's effect is dose- and context-dependent — too much, too early, and it starts to feel cloying. The candle is sized for ~40 hours of burn, which is roughly enough for an end-of-day ritual five evenings a week for two months. Don't burn it during work calls.
